Under the Hood
How Master Ebbi Works
Ancient method, modern execution. Here's how we bridge 3,000 years of I Ching wisdom with AI-powered interpretation.
The Three-Coin Casting Method
Master Ebbi faithfully replicates the traditional three-coin method used by I Ching practitioners for centuries. Three coins are tossed six times, building a hexagram line by line from the bottom up. Each toss yields a value of 6, 7, 8, or 9:
6 = three tails → old yin (changing) — probability: 1/8
7 = two tails + one head → young yang (stable) — probability: 3/8
8 = one tail + two heads → young yin (stable) — probability: 3/8
9 = three heads → old yang (changing) — probability: 1/8
The crucial difference: instead of physical coins, we use crypto.getRandomValues() — a cryptographic random number generator built into every modern browser. This produces true hardware-backed randomness, not pseudorandom numbers. The probability distribution is mathematically identical to tossing three fair coins.
We intentionally preserve the original probabilities. Old yin and old yang (changing lines) each have a 1/8 chance of appearing — making them relatively rare events, just as in the physical method. This matters because the frequency of changing lines affects how often readings show transformation versus stability.
AI Interpretation Engine
Once the hexagram is cast, Master Ebbi's AI interpretation engine takes over. The engine receives four inputs: your original question, the primary hexagram, any changing lines, and the transformed hexagram (if applicable).
The AI doesn't invent meanings. It draws from the classical I Ching texts — the Judgments attributed to King Wen, the Images from the Great Commentary, and the line texts from the Duke of Zhou — and contextualizes them to your specific question. Think of it as having a knowledgeable I Ching scholar read your casting and explain it in accessible language.
The interpretation is structured for clarity:
One-line insight— A direct, poetic summary that captures the hexagram's essence in a single sentence.
Accessible summary — A paragraph explaining what the hexagram means and why it appeared in response to your question. Written to be understood without any prior I Ching knowledge.
Three interpretation boxes — Detailed guidance covering: (1) how the hexagram applies to your situation, (2) the transformation or deeper meaning (with changing line explanation when applicable), and (3) actionable next steps.
Classical Source Material
Master Ebbi's hexagram database follows the King Wen sequence — the traditional ordering of the 64 hexagrams that has been the standard for over 3,000 years. Each hexagram entry includes the original Chinese name, English translation, trigram composition, the Judgment (彖辞), and the Image (象辞).
We use the eight classical trigrams — Heaven (乾), Earth (坤), Thunder (震), Water (坎), Mountain (艮), Wind (巽), Fire (离), and Lake (兑) — as the building blocks. Every hexagram is identified by its unique combination of upper and lower trigrams, ensuring mathematical completeness (8 × 8 = 64 possible combinations).
The hexagram images used on this site are from the Holitzka deck — beautiful artistic renderings that capture the spirit of each hexagram through visual metaphor, bridging the gap between abstract symbolism and intuitive understanding.
Personalization
The same hexagram can mean very different things depending on the question asked. Hexagram 1 (The Creative) in response to "Should I start a business?" carries different practical implications than in response to "How can I improve my relationship?"
Master Ebbi's AI uses your question as the lens through which to interpret the hexagram. The classical meaning remains the foundation, but the application is tailored. The changing lines (if present) add another layer of personalization — they pinpoint exactly where transformation is active in your situation and what the movement from your primary hexagram to the transformed hexagram means for you specifically.
Privacy & Data
Your readings are stored locally in your browser using localStorage. We do not store your questions or readings on any server. Your reading history is accessible only on the device and browser where you asked the question.
The coin casting happens entirely client-side — the random number generation runs in your browser, not on our servers. The only network call is to the AI interpretation service, which processes your question and hexagram to generate the reading. No personal data is retained after the interpretation is delivered.
Your readings are stored in your browser's local storage — not on our servers. You can revisit your latest reading at any time, but clear your browser data and they're gone.
